What can you expect from a professional social media marketer?

You know how to cook, right? You can dish up a solid bolognese and you have a few of Ottolenghi’s books rattling around somewhere that you pull out from time to time. But you also know that when you really want to eat something absolutely mouth watering, you head to your favourite local restaurant. You put your trust in the professionals to produce something to a quality that you simply can’t replicate at home.

Social media management is kind of like that.

Sure, anyone can slap a post up on Instagram with a caption and a couple of hashtags. But that doesn’t mean that everyone can serve up restaurant-quality digital content that engages.

Not everyone seems to understand that by hiring a professional social media marketer, they’re investing in someone who can elevate their online presence to a higher standard, and improve their brands .

Social media managers don’t just work in the moment, they’re always planning for the future, always looking three steps ahead. They find opportunities like national holidays or special events and work them into your marketing calendar so you don’t look back one week after Valentine’s Day and think “I wish I’d organised a special promotion for that”.

So, here’s a little run down on what a social media marketing professional can offer you:

1. Consistency

No more “I haven’t posted in ages” guilt, or getting it done with only one foot through the door. A social media manager will mean your digital marketing has an “always on” approach. You’ll be able to rest easy knowing at any given time of the day that the next post is lined up, comments are being responded to, your audience is being engaged and you haven’t had to lift a finger.

2. High quality content

Say goodbye to blurry imagery and off-brand captions. Not only will a professional digital marketer ensure they’re working with high resolution imagery each and every time, they’ll also work alongside you to perfect your brand’s tone of voice to ensure that each and every post is delivered on-brand.

3. Forward thinking

Social media managers don’t just work in the moment, they’re always planning for the future, always looking three steps ahead. They find opportunities like national holidays or special events and work them into your marketing calendar so you don’t look back one week after Valentine’s Day and think “I wish I’d organised a special promotion for that”.

4. Data-driven actions

Above all, social media marketers base their actions on the evidence. A good social media marketer will be tracking the performance of their work, seeking insights in the data and drawing conclusions about what’s working, what’s not, and how to constantly evolve to improve. That means that your social media marketing will never be stagnant. Your social media manager will always be shifting their delivery towards a more impactful and engaging outcome.

This is where the analogy ends

Because there’s a lot of ways that social media marketing is also not like going to a restaurant at all.

So, what should you not expect or assume from your social media marketer?

1. Instant success

We’ve all heard stories about an “overnight success” – the problem is those stories often forget to mention the years of grunt work that have gone on behind the scenes. Social media is often a slow burn, and success can be more compounding in nature.

If you’re looking at someone else’s account and asking “how come they’re so popular?” – they’ve probably put in a lot of work to get to that point. Or, they’ve paid through the nose for it.

2. Your dying business to be saved

I wish I could click my fingers and bring a million paying customers to your brand, I truly do. But that’s not how social media works. As I’ve just mentioned, social media marketing is a slow burn. And while it can be an incredibly powerful marketing tool that increases your brand reach and grows your customer-base, the make or break of your business shouldn’t rest on its shoulders.

3. That its a “quick job” or an “easy task”

I once received an email from a potential employer who asked me to quote up a “quick job” for him that “should be easy”. When I added up the amount of work he was asking for, the quote I came back with indicated quite the opposite.

A lot of strategy, data analysis, research, critical thinking and creativity go into great social media marketing implementation – as well as time.

4. We know "tricks" that perform better than paid posts

There’s no secret loophole around the algorithm that is only revealed to those initiated into the secret society of social media gurus. If there was, I would be SO rich right now.

The truth of the matter is paid content will always trump organic posts – that’s the way social media likes to operate.

Overall, the pros outweigh the cons

We may not be the untouchable force for instant social media success that every bloody job description expects us to be, but social media marketing professionals are still pretty damn useful and a fantastic investment in your brand’s marketing tool belt.

So with that said, if you’re ready to talk about getting your digital marketing going, let’s talk
